What salon do you work at and how long have you been there?
I work at Kelsey Drive Chatters in Newfoundland I have been here for 4 years since we opened. It was amazing being at the salon from when we opened because we were really involved in all of the set up in the salon. Stocking shelves building chairs… different than doing hair, and this helped the salon take shape by putting who we are into the salon.
What is one of your favourite things about your job?
I would say that the stories my clients tell me, I hear about their background what they’ve done where they have been it's just awesome to live through other people.
What does style happy mean to you?
It means that the person has confidence in their look, but I think its more of a movement by building confidence and making sure the client is happy with themselves or us; just delighted with their look in general.
If you could style anyone’s hair (someone from the past or present) who would it be?
I would have to say, Marylyn Monroe, she empowers confidence and the women’s movement. I love the way she had her hair, but it would be cool to try something new on her, but I couldn’t change it too much because it is so iconic.
Do you have a day at work that stands out to you?
I love when wedding parties come in. I love the atmosphere that they bring in with them. By far those are my favourite days. I’ve never had a Bridezilla, but I have had some picky brides… but in my mind, that is a good thing because it gives me access to their vision. They need to have what they want for their big day, and this allows me to get in their head.
Something fun or surprising about you?
I feel like I am an open book, so it’s hard to surprise people. I do like to explore the city around me, and I love to try new food. I don’t think I have anything really hidden that would seem shocking or out of the ordinary to someone.
What is your personal philosophy?
Live in the moment. I feel that allows you to let the stress go so you don’t have to worry about what is coming next; one step at a time.
Do you have a mentor in the hair industry? If so who would it be?
I can’t pinpoint one specific person, but I’ve had many senior stylists who have mentored me in some way. They have helped shape me into the person that I have become. I have been a stylist for 10 years now; I hope that with my experience that I have been able to mentor another stylist. I love to guide them to work through and learn from their weaknesses.
What is your favourite thing to do on a day off?
I love to go for walks. Like I said before I love to explore and find new gems in our city. I just love to get out, I can’t just sit around. I have a three-year-old daughter, and she is the reason I really don’t sit around. Kids really can’t sit still at that age.
How did you become interested in the beauty industry?
I have always wanted to do my own hair and the people around me. I was always experimenting with my hair, so I knew it was something that I would be interested in. I would say it’s been my desire since middle school or high school.
