We’re happy to be involved with Ronald McDonald House as our national charity  and as such we’re leveraging our grand opening events to help raise funds for the House in that particular city. For Burlington Mapleview Centre we are supporting the Ronald McDonald House location  in Hamilton. We caught up with Jill – Manager, Communications & Branding from this location.

Chatters: How many families has the house served on average in a year? 
Jill: In 2016 we served over 800 families. This year we are estimating to close the year out serving over 1,200 families staying more than 14,000 nights.

Chatters: Are you seeking volunteers over the holiday season and if so what types of roles are you needing help with? 
Jill: The House and the Family Room have over 350 volunteers. We do not look for seasonal volunteers, unless it comes to snow removal or baking as we require volunteers to have a police check and interview with our Volunteer Manager. If someone is interested in becoming a volunteer, they can visit our website for more information. There are a number of different roles available.

Chatters: What does connection to the House mean to you?
Jill; RMHCSCO serves families whose children are the sickest and must travel the farthest to access the life-saving medical care they need. We are so lucky to be partnered with the amazing people at Chatters. Their donation gives the greatest gift to families, the gift of togetherness.  All contributions means so much to us, especially during the holiday season because it helps us ensure our families can be together when it means the most.

Chatters: What do you tell businesses or individuals who want to donate to the house but may be concerned their donation is too small? 
Jill: We always say around the House “small change, big difference.” We do not receive government funding and McDonald’s donates only 20 per cent of our operating budget. We rely on the community to help us fund the rest. To us, every dollar counts when we are keeping families close to their sick child and we are proud to save those families more than $2.7 million in out of pocket expenses. A donation to RMHCSCO, no matter the size, means that families can focus on what is important, their child.
