How to Switch Up Your Hair Routine for Winter

Maintaining healthy hair all year long is something that can be stressful and intimidating but it doesn’t have to be! With the right hair routine and knowing when it is ok to try something new, having great hair is totally attainable.

The Base

We hear questions like, “Is it ok to switch up my shampoo and conditioner?” or “What will happen to my hair if I try a new leave in?” There are so many great products out there, you should never be afraid to explore, and everybody hates missing out on something awesome…#FOMO! The key is making these changes correctly! Having a good base routine is so important and will help to keep your scalp balanced. Trying a new shampoo and conditioner every time you wash can cause irritation, dandruff and unnecessary oil build up. This is your bodies way of trying to restore your scalp's natural chemical make up and keep up with these changes. That being said there are certain times when it is okay to mix things up, like if you're going for a different look or when the seasons change. Trying a new base product can help maintain your hair's integrity and keep it healthy all year long without compromising cleanliness and comfort.

Bust that Build Up

If you are using multiple styling products like root boosters or heavy hairsprays, one of the best things you can do for your scalp to bring it back to its natural state by going for a deep clean! Having a deep cleansing and clarifying shampoo is so important for scalp health because they help to strip away harsh chemicals and product build up directly at the root. Some are even meant to balance your scalp's PH levels! This will help you feel like you have a good clean base to start over and you may alleviate some irritation or oiliness. Now this is not something you do every wash, or you risk drying out your hair and scalp. One of my go to products is the Redken Clean Maniac Hair Cleansing Cream, not only does it get a good deep clean but it doesn’t dry your hair out. P.S If you are a swimmer this is the Cleanser for you!

Defeating an Oily Scalp

When your issues are more inline with oiliness vs build up, try adding in a cleanser with tea tree or peppermint every few washes. The Paul Mitchell Tea Tree Lavender Mint Shampoo and Conditioner is great since it has both, which will help clear the excess oil from your scalp and give a soothing feeling if you are experiencing some irritation (oh, and it smells amazing!) If you are washing your hair everyday, believe it or not this could also be part of the problem. When you are trying to strip too much oil from your scalp it actually causes you to produce more! Try skipping a day and if necessary add in a dry shampoo, your hair will thank you!

Shampoos for all Seasons

Changes in the weather happens to be one of the most common reasons people feel the need to change up their base routine. My hair goes through changes a few times a year, mostly around September and October it tends to become oilier to account for extra dry and chilly air. During this time, I like to add in a good PH balancing shampoo to make my scalp feel cleaner and healthier, ad right now I am hooked on the AG Balance Shampoo and The Boost Conditioner. It's a light weight cleansing shampoo with apple cider vinegar that naturally balances PH. I usually use this product every other wash for about a month or two, just until my scalp has a chance to climatize.

Leave Ins for Winter Hair

Another one of my routine products I like to change up seasonally is actually my leave in treatments. During most of the warmer months I like to use products that have an oil or lightweight serum texture so they don’t add any extra weight to my hair. But as the summer sun gets further away and the cold air comes into play, it is important to give thirsty hair some added love. This is a good time to try something heavier, usually cream based leave-ins are the best for coating dry hair and will keep more of the frizz away. My absolute favourite leave-in treatment is the Pureology Colour Fanatic Spray, a cream in a spray bottle! I love this product because it is easy to use and applies evenly to your hair without weighing it down. Not only does this product help with porosity and moisture balance but it is infused with ingredients like coconut and olive oil that will help reduce static and frizz. I think we can agree we all need a bit of that, especially when rocking those wool scarves!
