What salon do you work and what is your role? How long have you been there?
I’m a hairstylist apprentice at Chatters St. Albert and have been here for almost three years.
How did you learn about Chatters?
I had a friend back in high school and when I was looking for my first job, he introduced me to Cia at the St. Albert location. After meeting her, I knew I wanted to work for Chatters so I started as a receptionist, then moved to the back when I started hair school.
How did you choose your entry for the Dare to Hair?
Most of my family are my models however I picked my mom as the one for Dare to Hair. We’ve had a rough few years with her having a heart attack and being in a car accident. I thought giving her a transformation would lift her spirits and be good for both us. I was so excited when I saw that she was a winner. My moms favourite colour is pink and she’s never tried anything funky with her hair so I thought the contrast between white and pastel pink would look really good on her and she loved it.
Would you recommend others enter competitions and why?
Yes, it is so much fun to hangout with my model, do hair and create a look that makes her feel beautiful. It’s also so fun to go to symposium and see the makeovers everyone else has done.
When/how did you know you wanted to become a stylist?
I knew the second I touched a mannequin’s hair in my high school cosmetology class. After my first year in cosmetology I wanted to be a stylist so bad and would have done anything to achieve that goal. This is also when I started scoping out a salon to work at.
If you could give your younger self advice what would you say?
I would say to stop stressing all the small stuff. I never thought I would be good enough to be a stylist but now I’m proud of what I have achieved and how far I’ve come.
Favorite couple of products?
I really like the Redken Fabricate O3 because I can use it to add some texture or just as a thermal spray. I also love the Redken Triple Take 32, it’s an amazing hair spray that provides even coverage.
Favorite style trend?
I really love loose curls because it gives a nice tousled texture. I also like funky colours, they allow me to change up a client’s hair and see what colours work well with others.
One of the best things about your job?
I would have to say my clients, I love being able to do something different each day and put a smile on their face. It’s a huge goal in my chair to make my clients feel special.
