Beauty Pros

Mariama Gueye – Prairie Mall, Grande Prairie

Where do you work and what is your role? How long have you worked there?

I’ve been a beauty consultant at the Prairie Mall location for 11 months. So I’m responsible for helping guests in the front end, showing them to their appointment, and offering them anything else they may need.

How did you find out about Chatters?

I was actually just handing out resumes at the mall and didn’t realize they were hiring. Plus I love hair product so it was perfect.

What is your favorite thing about your job?

Customers! Something that I actually really enjoy is being able to help our French guests that don’t speak much English, French is my first language.

Fave thing to do on a day off?

I’m in school so I’m usually doing homework on a day off but it’s nice to just relax sometimes if I can!

Personal philosophy?

“Our greatest weakness lies in giving up. The most certain way to succeed is always to try just one more time.”

What does creativity mean to you?

Being free and being able to express yourself without worrying about people judging you.

What does style happy mean to you?

I think in means being around people who bring you up and make you better. It’s also about feeling good in your own skin and not caring about what other people think as long as you’re happy.

Best day on the job? Describe it?

One of the best days I ever had at Chatters was when a woman came into the salon and had a hard time communicating what she wanted because she didn’t speak very much English. Originally I didn’t recognize her accent and eventually she pulled out google translate and I realized she spoke French! We ended up having a 20-minute conversation. Turns out she just wanted a cut and colour so I helped to write notes for her about what she was after so that her stylist could give her exactly what she wanted. She also ended up buying some product and a straightener, it was a really cool day being able to help her out!

How can you tell Chatters cares about their employees?

If I’m not feeling ok, my managers always notice and make an effort to ask what’s wrong. My managers even know what my exam days are and always ask about how schools going. I think that’s awesome because they really don’t have to do that but it shows that they care about me and want to get to know me.

Favorite style trend?

Afros! Just because I have one. I also am really into French braids and balayage.

Advice to your younger self?

I think to focus more on your education and to always listen to your mom!

One of your favorite products?

One of my favourites is the Revlon Professional UniqOne Treatment, it’s the BEST thing for detangling curly hair! I also really like the Saryna Key line, it’s great for my African American curls.
