Beauty Pros

Nadia Elias, London Fanshawe

Tell us a little about yourself and where you work.

I work at our Fanshawe location in London Ontario. I am a master stylist, and I have worked here for two years since it opened. I have been a stylist for seven years but have had most of the same co-workers since my manager started this Chatters two years ago.

How did you get into the beauty industry?

I have always had an interest in the beauty industry, but my family convinced me to go to University, and I have a degree in History and Religion. The History and Religion degree are not so useful in my new career of being a hair stylist (haha). After I got my degree, I decided to pursue my passion, and I went to hair school.

How did you find out about Chatters?

I used to work at an independent salon, but then my boss had decided to open the first Chatters in London Ontario, and now there are three Chatters in the area.

How is Chatters different than other Salons?

Chatters offers stylists tons of education and training like no other. The passion they have for social media is fantastic. They have product knowledge like no other which is very important when selling to our clientele. The Chatters that I work at has developed an incredible team atmosphere which is why I have been with the same people now for seven years.

If you could style any celebrity who would it be and why?

The celebrity that I would like to style is Katy Perry because she is having such a Miley moment right now and I would love to be the person to fix that for her. She used to have such a classic look; I would love for her to grow it out and then be the one to rejuvenate it for her.

What is your favourite thing about your job?

There are so many things I like about my job, but I love seeing people’s faces when you swing them around in the chair, and the expression on their face lights up when they see themselves reflected back in the mirror because they are in love with their hair. This is very rewarding.

What is your favourite thing to do on your day off (aside from interview with Chatters)?

I really enjoy doing beauty stuff e.g. social media, I have a very full Instagram account and I enjoy creating videos as well.   I like to continually educate myself by watching useful videos as you can never really stop learning. Aside from all of that, which takes up quite a bit of my time, I have a very energetic puppy who is 1. His name is Winston, and he is a pomchi, and there is no one I would rather spend my day off with.

Do you have a bucket list for your career?

I have had a few things on my bucket list for my career that I can proudly cross off. I have always wanted to be Redken certified which I now am, and I have wanted to be a master stylist since working with Chatters which I now am. Some other bucket list ideas that I cannot cross off the list quite yet would be working with Chatters more on social media, maybe creating videos for clients to watch so they can have some useful tips when it comes to daily styling.

What does creativity mean to you?

It’s a way to express yourself and not have to apologize for it; it’s to have your own look and be confident about it.

When did you know you wanted to be a stylist?

I have always been interested in hair and makeup for as long as I can remember. I have always done my friends’ hair for theatre and in school, until finally, it became my career.

What was your best day on the job? Describe it?

The best day on the job, oh that’s a hard one. The Redken certification stands out as it was quite challenging, and when I found out that I had passed, it made me cry. The number of people who have the certification is quite low. The tests are very intense; they have a practical skills test where they scrutinize your work. They also have a written part which takes a lot of studying and effort. So, to find out I passed this certification made for a great day. I was also determined to become a master stylist and that day came very quickly, so that was another great day. There are also the days that clients will come into the salon in tears holding their orange mushy hair asking for help. This happens so very often, and I find that we can take these moments for granted. But when they look at what you have done to correct the problem, it makes you realize that we need to step back and take a moment to realize what we have done and how great every one of these moments are.

What is your favourite style trend?

Oooh, a long bob with a balayage and a beachy wave! I am the queen of the beachy wave! To do this style, I use a flat iron to curl the hair because the curl holds so well this way; it sometimes looks even better the next day. Clients sometimes struggle with this look, so I will always do my best to show them how to create this hairstyle by showing them the technique while they are sitting in my chair.

If you had advice to give to your younger self what would it be?

My advice would be to do what you want to do and don’t worry too much about trying to impress other people. For years I had done what other people wanted me to do, (like getting a degree in History and Religion) but once I had decided that I would follow my own path my life changed and I am a new girl now.
