What Salon do you work at and how long have you worked there?
I work at Chatters Kelsey Drive Newfoundland, I have been here for 2 months now, but before that, I worked at Chatters in Corner Brook for 2 ½ years.
What is something fun or surprising about you?
I like to paint, I used to love every kind of art, but I just stick to painting now. Give me a glass of wine, and I will just sit there painting away; it’s super relaxing. My style is just abstract, I don’t know that I’m that good yet, but I just love it which is why I stick to the abstract. I also like to refinish furniture! You can take something old and completely transform it into something new and beautiful again; it always depends what kind of mood I’m in as to what I like to do with the furniture.
If you could give advice to your younger self what would it be?
I think it would be, just stay true to myself and not always care about what people think. That wasn’t always easy in the type of career I chose, but it has transformed me into a better person.
What is your favourite trend or style?
It honestly changes every day, it depends on my mood. I love the older pinned up look with the red lipstick, but then other days I love the bohemian, headband wearing, loose curly hair look. I have been told that I am very edgy with my style… whatever that means I don’t know, but I will take it!
What celebrity would you like to style?
Demi Lovato would be fun because she is always changing her hair and trying new things. I love people that like to go outside the box.
What would you consider to be a good day on the job?
A good day on the job would be busy and be doing things I like, lots of colours or huge transformations; I love that.
What are two of your favourite hair products?
Moroccan Oil Dry Shampoo, the product lasts a long time, and I like it because I don’t feel it in my hair. I can use it for three days without massive build up; I find that it also helps increase the volume in my hair which is a bonus. Another go-to product for me is the AG Tousled Texture it helps separate the curls for the beachy waves; works best on shoulder length hair or shorter.
Do you have a bucket list?
I just want to travel more; my next place would be Ireland. I hear that Ireland is like a big Newfoundland. I would even like to tour more of Newfoundland. I moved here when I was 17, and before that, I lived in Northern Ontario, and I can’t say that I miss the change, I love Newfoundland.
Do you have a mentor?
My college Instructor Verna, she was older, maybe in her late 60’s, and she is still teaching. She was so hard on me when I was in school, and I hated that… but now that I am out in the industry working, I loved the fact that she was strict with me. She taught us how to cut men’s hair without a guard, and we were even taught to use the straight razor on the back of the neck; most schools don’t teach these skills. I also really loved learning from my retail manager Trina at Chatters in Cornerbrook. I still message her for advice! Trina doesn’t do hair anymore because of her shoulder, but she was able to stay in the industry she loved by becoming a retail manager at Chatters. It was so great having her at the Salon because she could answer any questions about hairstyles cuts or colours. I know that she loves working there because it makes her feel like she is doing hair again.
