Winter Hair Problems: Solved!

Jennifer Dartch is a franchise owner and stylist at Chatters London Fanshawe in Ontario. Jennifer is an award winning, driven, talented and understanding hair stylist. We asked her to share some thoughts on something that affects us all in Canada: winter hair care!

Winter hair woes affect every single one of us living in Canada, the true North! Along with all the things we love about winter like fire places, hot chocolate, sweaters, and blankets, there are a few common hair problems and we’ve got the deets on how to combat them!

Static

Why?
When temperatures start to get chilly your hair picks up an electrical charge from the dry air, causing it to stand up. Static can also occur because of the heat being on everywhere we go and all of the hats, scarves and coats we are taking on and off all day.

The fix

It’s a pretty unavoidable problem but a few key things can definitely help! Use a more moisturizing shampoo and conditioner to help add a little extra moisture to those thirsty locks. Another great way to up your hair care regime is with a leave  in conditioner. These come in both a cream or spray consistency so depending on your natural texture you’ll be able to find the one that’s right for you. Another option to throw in your purse are Redken’s Frizz Dismiss Fly-Away-Fix Sheets, they’re basically dryer sheets for your hair. Just rub throughout hair to instantly fix the static in your strands!

Dry scalp

Why?
The heat being on is again the culprit for this common winter woe. In combination with that dry winter air sucking the moisture out of everything, seeing some scalp irritation is extremely common in these winter months.

The fix

A shampoo designed for a sensitive or dry scalp can be an absolute life saver! Another option is to use a mask conditioner and massage it into the scalp once a week to help moisturize that scalp as well as your ends.

Dry and Dull Ends

Why?
Just like with static and dry scalp, when the temperature drops so does the moisture level in those ends. This is especially true for curly hair that is already lacking in moisture and prone to frizz.

The fix

Moisture masks and leave in conditioners are your best friend yet again! If you are colouring ask your stylist about adding Redken’s PH Bonder Treatment into your colour service to help keep those ends in their best state, you’ll be glad you did.

Flat hair

Why?
Taking those knitted wholly hats on and off all day long can do quite the number on your style. Not to mention that crazy blizzard weather can really weigh down your tresses, and no one wants flat hat hair for the day!

The fix

A dry texture product that gives instant lift to clean dry hair will change up your style in seconds and give it that instant lift it so badly needs! Another great option for second or third day hair is a dry shampoo to refresh your blowout and restore that bounce. Say buh-bye to toque hair FOREVER!

Split Ends

Why?
Split ends can happen all year round due to things like hair colour, heat tools, and just every day brushing and styling.

The fix

The best way to fix your split ends is to visit your stylist and get a haircut. However there are a few options to help prevent them and smooth them until you can make it to the salon. These moisturizing products will help prevent breakage and may even help your hair to grow longer and stronger.
